What Is 'Skinimalism'?

With a Global Pandemic Shifting Our Focus Onto Health and Wellness, in 2021 the Beauty Industry Saw a Rise of Interest in ‘Skinification’ or ‘Skinimalism’, Which Is Simply Put, Taking Better Care of Your Skin With Fewer Products Rather Than Relying on Primers, Concealers and Highlighters for That Healthy Glow.

People want pure and hardworking active ingredients to rejuvenate and aid towards happy and healthy skin. In other words, a ‘skinimalist’ routine consists of just the essential products and even more ideally, only with the essential ingredients. So how will these new found trends affect how we take care of our skin in 2022? We sat down with our expert, BIOEFFECT Co-founder and Chief Scientific Officer Dr. Björn Örvar to find out.

“Over the past decade, we have experienced a more scientific and direct approach to how products are formulated, with increased emphasis on evidence-based results as well as more simple, safe, and pure products. We have also finally seen the arrival of biotechnology into the cosmetic arena, something that we have been doing for years with our groundbreaking, bio-engineered Barley EGF. I expect biotechnology will become much more important in the beauty industry in the coming years, as this technology can provide us with very powerful tools to develop more precise formulations with active ingredients that our skin is asking for or could benefit from. Also, we will see biotechnology increasingly helping us to create more targeted treatments, addressing specific skin concerns and compromised skin with strong reference to medical research and our skin biology.”

With all of this in mind, it´s interesting to hear Dr. Björns take on the effect the pandemic has had on our skin as wearing face masks is the new normal of our lives. Dr. Björn explains that “the skin barrier will continue to be a focus in skincare in 2022 as continued use of face masks is the new reality for our skin. What’s more, is that studies continue to show that irritating environmental factors such as UV rays, pollution, stress and diet to name a few, are sources of non-detectable inflammation in skin. This is a serious cause of premature skin aging, or ‘inflamm-aging’, by breaking down collagen and elastin over time, impacting the normal housekeeping of our skin. Because of this, it’s likely we’ll see new and exciting, mitigating ingredients that help heal a compromised skin barrier, retain moisture, and minimize irritation and inflammation.”

What we want is to give the customer effective results, and a long list of ingredients doesn’t always do that, sometimes it will do quite the opposite. “According to a consumer report conducted by NPD Group in September 2020, 22% of women have changed their skincare routine because of the pandemic with a majority intending to stick with their new routine when things normalize. Moving forward, we are seeing a shift towards simplicity, a simplification of skincare both in terms of products, routines, and ingredients, with people replacing their expansive skincare collection with fewer targeted products that are backed by science and studies.”

Dr. Björn Örvar goes on to say that “in the past decade, we have seen a stronger ingredient awareness among customers and a rise in the so-called ‘clean beauty movement´. For example, recent studies show that around a third of US women between the age of 18-34 avoid products with parabens and silicones. When we launched the EGF Serum in 2010, we soon realized that it stood apart from most other skincare products on the market because we had limited the formulation to only 7 pure ingredients. As a biotechnology company we never could understand the reasoning behind the long, complex ingredient lists of some products; are tens or hundreds of ingredients really something that our skin is asking for? With a constant barrage of information and ingredients being thrown our way, it´s not surprising that customers are left feeling confused, and often thinking that more is more, when in most cases it´s the opposite. With skincare info sheets being very word heavy and a hefty length for us to even try and read, let alone understand, we tend to use most skincare incorrectly. We either use too many products, try new formulations too often, therefore not letting them take the appropriate amount of time to do their jobs, or we might layer or combine them incorrectly. All of this overwhelms, overstimulates and confuses the skin. With the skin being our bodies largest organ, we really should treat it well and give it the amount of thought it deserves when it comes to what we put on it.
